Reactive Dogs and Social Skills

Writer: pr24girlpr24girl

Unfortunately, during the pandemic many dogs missed out on much needed socialization. Does your dog behave well at home but becomes like a "Dr. Jekkyl and Mr. Hyde" when you try to take him anywhere or when people come over to visit? Some dogs end up with sensory overload and may be over exuberant, shy, or aggressive. If this describes your dog, start by making short ventures out with plenty of treats in your pocket. As soon as something distracts your dog and you see that unwanted change in behavior, get your dogs attention, give a treat and move in the other direction. If you dog calms down after a few steps, stop there and just speak to your dog in an encouraging way. Depending on your dog's reaction, you may either continue a short walk or return to your house. Little by little your dog will trust you to keep it safe.
