This question does not have a simple, clear answer. It really depends on what is needed. If you need a dog trained as a service dog, then yes a trainer may be your best choice. The same goes for specialty working tasks or even some hunting dogs. But in most cases, I would highly recommend enrolling in a training class with your dog. Many trainers will tell you that it is more about training the owner. This gives you the chance to meet other dog lovers and learn along side your dog. You will have the chance to ask questions about correcting a problem behavior. Another benefit is that your dog will become more socialized in a group class. A good trainer will explain what to do, demonstrate what to do, and coach you on how to do it. Whatever route you go, check on the person's credentials. insurance, and methods they use. The time spent bonding with your dog and the satisfaction that you did the training is worth it. I have had several people schedule a private training session to see if it is a fit for them. So don't be afraid to ask if that is a possibility before committing to a class. Happy training!
