Tuesday Training Byte: Using the "under" command
The under command is useful for several applications. I like the versatility for fearful dogs, anxious dogs, distracted or hyper dogs, and reactive dogs. It can be used in an engagement game as well for added fun. I use it when sitting in a public place, by having the dog get under my chair or table, or under my legs. This provides a safety den for your pet like a barrier. This helps your dog feel safe from unwanted strangers reaching out to pet or other approaching dogs. You can also use it to calm your dog if you are in a noisy environment like an outdoor café or soccer game, or at the vet’s office.
Start by sitting on the edge of your chair. Reach under your knees and lure your dog to crawl under. As he is at least part way in, drop a few treats by his front feet. Be sure that your feet are somewhat close together so he doesn’t rush out the front, but is forced to go in and out by the sides. Try to keep your dog under your legs in a down position for a few seconds. At the end, tell him “Out!” and praise him well. Gradually extend the time before allowing him to come out. Depending on the size of your dog, you may have to get creative on creating his “hidy-hole” for the under game. For example, a Great Dane will be too large for under your chair, but could be sent under a desk or card table, or small tent. This game is helpful in making your dog more comfortable in public settings. Happy Training!
